Board Certification is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar Association; certification recognizes professional competency and experience in lawyers within 24 fields of legal practice, and it is approved by the Supreme Court of Florida.

In 1982, the Florida Supreme Court established Board Certifications in order to help the public identify specialists in various fields of law. Those attorneys that are Board Certified are the only ones that are allowed to call themselves "experts" or "specialists" or to refer to themselves as Board Certified Specialists when advertising their legal services. In Florida, only 7% of Florida Bar members are eligible for Board Certification and approximately 4,500 Florida attorneys are Board Certified. Of those, only 372 of them are Board Certified in criminal trial law and our attorney Kati is one of the few to have achieved such a certification.

In order for an attorney to become Board Certified, they must meet the following requirements:

  • Achieved a satisfactory peer review assessment in the specialty field, especially as it relates to their competence, ethics and professionalism.

Fort Myers DUI defense attorney Kati Smith Calvo was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2001, where she has dedicated her efforts to defending clients in all fields of criminal law. Over the course of Kati's career, she has defended thousands of clients in each division of the courts including: juvenile, misdemeanor and felony. Her experience as a former Assistant Public Defender has given her an abundance of experience defending clients which has allowed her to sharpen her legal skills.

Kati was a member of the Calusa chapter of the American Inns of Court and a former professor at Florida Gulf Coast University in the Criminal Justice program. She is a member of the 20th Circuit Unlicensed Practice of Law committee that was established by The Florida Bar. She is also admitted to practice in the Middle District of Florida and she is a member of the Family Law Section of The Florida Bar, as well as the Lee County Bar Association. Kati graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York and attended law school at Syracuse University College of Law.
